The 1892 Geary Act

The 1892 Geary Act renewed the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. It required Chinese in the U.S. to carry a Certificate of Residence to prove that they had legally entered the country. Chinese already living in the United States were required to register to receive their certificate. Those without a certificate were subject to detention and deportation.1
